How to Create a Romantic Garden this Valentine's Day

Posted on: 12/02/2016

Rose sales are expected to hit a peak this weekend as men all over the country pretend they haven’t forgotten and rush to a garage on Sunday morning to buy flowers for their partner. Imagine how much easier life would be if you could stroll out into your garden and snip a perfect sweet-smelling rose from your own garden to present to your Valentine’s Day date. Take a look at our advice on how to create a romantic garden this Valentine’s Day.

Titania’s Bower

Take your lead from Shakespeare’s most romantic comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and create a perfumed bower fit for a faerie queen. Surround a garden seat with wild thyme, oxslips and  nodding violets. O’er canopy it with luscious woodbine and plant sweet musk roses and eglantine nearby for a gorgeous scent. The most popular climbing plants include clematis, wisteria and honeysuckle, and they’re all easy to care for.

A Rose by Any Other Name

Rose gardens take commitment, but reap rich rewards. If you are growing your roses in pots, they can be planted all year round. If you are planting them in the ground, you’d better hurry as the November-February window is fast closing. Once established, rose bushes need feeding (rotted down horse manure is traditional) and regular watering. Prune twice a year in Spring and Autumn. They should be in full flower for at least five months of the year and other blooms will appear in frost free weather conditions.

Take up Topiary

Hedgerow plants such as Box, Holly and Yew are particularly suitable for topiary, the art of shaping plants into sculptures of symbols or animals. Impress a loved one with a simple heart shape in time for Valentine’s Day or perhaps shape your bush into a traditional symbol of virility such as the hare.

Leading Up the Garden Path

Create a pathway that explores the features of your garden. A meandering path that takes you past different outbreaks of foliage and scents is the perfect place for a romantic garden stroll on Valentine’s Day. Keep your secateurs handy. There may be an opportunity to cut a perfect early rose for your date and that will be worth so much more than a dozen purchased last-minute from a garage forecourt.
