5 Unique Brickweave Patterns for your Driveway
Posted on: 14/09/2016Our team of dedicated professionals have been laying brickwork driveways all over East Anglia for years. Brickweaving is the arrangement of bricks into a repetitive pattern on a driveway, and we have it down to a fine art. There are a surprisingly large number of patterns that can be made out of the placement of the humble brick. Here are five of the most popular.
1. Stacking Bond
If you tried to build a wall by stacking bricks on top of one another with no overlap, it would be a very weak wall. In the horizontal plane, this doesn’t matter, so this is an effective and attractive arrangement.
2. Basketweave
The long side of a brick - the stretcher - is exactly twice as long as the short side - the header. This means that you can take every second pair of bricks in a stacking bond arrangement and rotate them 90 degrees. This will give you the basketweave effect, so called because the finished article resembles the interlocking threads of a woven reed basket.
3. Running Bond
The running bond is your basic garden wall arrangement of overlapping rows of bricks. Houses with cavity walls also tend to have this weave and you may want it reflected in your driveway.
4. English Bond
In the English bond the bricks are woven so that you have rows of bricks stretcher side out alternating with rows of bricks header side out.
5. Herringbone
Probably the most popular choice for driveways is the elegant herringbone weave. This is another design that takes advantage of the 2:1 length ratio of the stretcher to the header. The header of one brick is placed against the stretcher of another brick to create a chevron. Many of these can be tessellated together to cover the driveway. You can choose the angle of the design. Modern houses often choose a herringbone brickweave driveway offset at 45 degrees.
There are dozens of brickweave patterns, and we can cater to whichever takes your fancy. If you have a particular pattern in mind or a photograph of a pattern that you would like copied, let us know.
