Big Ideas for your Small Garden

Posted on: 05/06/2014

Whilst there are obviously certain limitations to having a small garden or enclosed courtyard, you should not let this stop you from having big ideas of creating an enjoyable and relaxing outdoor space. There are a number of things you can do to give the illusion of having more space in your garden than you actually do:

  • Height: In the same way that you use the walls inside your home for decoration, use the walls and fences in your garden to do the same. Using creepers and trailers help to draw people’s eyes upwards.
  • Colour: Using cool colours, such as purples and blues, help to make small spaces feel larger than they actually are. Hot colours such as reds, yellows and oranges have the opposite effect.
  • Trees: Planting larger trees may seem like a bad idea in a confined space, but they will help to add height and privacy. Canopy trees will offer a leafy roof to your garden without taking up too much space; especially if you can clear away lower stems.
  • Shapes: Introducing a mixture of colour and shape into your paving will help to create a focal point in the garden; diverting visitors attention from the limited amount of space.

These are just a few suggestions that demonstrate no matter what the size of your outdoor space, there are plenty of tips and tricks available to give the illusion of space.
