Driveway and Patio Patterns: What is Best For You?
Posted on: 25/03/2015As spring has finally sprung and the summer months are only round the corner, you may have been considering having a new driveway or patio installed. If this is the case, there are a few things to consider, such as what type of driveway or patio are you looking for? There are many different materials to choose from such as brick and stone but when it comes to the design and layout, which is best? We take a look at some of the most popular patterns.
Herringbone Pattern
Herringbone paving patterns are constructed from 2:1 blocks. This means the bricks are twice as long as they are wide. This type of paver is laid going in alternate directions creating a 'V' shape and is the perfect pattern for heavy traffic areas such as driveways. Interlocked and laid as 90° herringbone or 45° herringbone, the layout can be enhanced with subtle colour changes in blocks and/or the use of pattern features. This pattern has a strong visual effect and adds character to any outdoor space.
Stretcher Bond & Basket Weave Patterns
Stretcher bond and basket weave paving patterns are used for pathways or patio areas with light foot traffic. These block paving patterns can be combined with octant and circle features to create beautiful designs. Stretcher Bond is one of the simplest offset patterns where the joints are offset by exactly half the width of the paving units. Two of the most common types of Stretcher Bond patterns are the Transverse and Longitudinal patterns.
The Basket Weave pattern originates from the old English landscape design era and is a well-known pattern that will bring a vintage look to your patio or driveway. The pattern alternates between vertical and horizontal pairs. The paired pavers create rows and columns that have an eye catching effect. This patter is ideal for homeowners who are looking for a historic or vintage look. The Basket Weave is very durable and perfect for nearly all outdoor spaces.
Running Bond Pattern
This is the most common pattern amongst homeowners today as it's a simple pattern to lay, easy to install and uses the least amount of waste compared to other patterns. Running Bond is laid side by side creating illusions with its strong linear lines. These illusions can make your patio look longer or even wider depending on the direction it's laid. Running Bond is perfect for small areas, making them seem bigger.
