Garden Rockery Design Ideas
Posted on: 14/07/2015There are many ways to create a beautiful landscape in your garden and if you are dealing with particularly difficult slopes then a garden rockery could be the perfect solution. They create a great focal point, adding interest, dimension, texture and colour. We have a few rockery ideas to give you some inspiration.
Ideas to consider
- Choosing plants for a garden rockery: Plants best suited to rockeries are those which grow slow and low and are happy in dry areas. Before you start planting, set out the plants in their pots to check the layout.
- The right rocks: The best rocks for a rockery are basalt, York stone, Welsh green stone, slate and Cotswold stone all of which are very popular choices however, local stone is always recommended for two reasons: availability and transportation costs.
- Natural effect: Avoid the rounded same-sized shape rocks that you so often see at garden centres and choose different looking shapes and sizes for a more natural effect.
- Sloping garden: Rockeries can turn a difficult sloping plot into an attractive garden feature. The ideal place to build a rockery is on a slope in part or full sun.
- Rockeries near water features: A water feature complements a rockery really well, so why not line the water's edge with pieces of stone, creating a natural look.
- Oriental rock garden: both Chinese and Japanese gardens use rocks as a large part of their landscape. Flat rocks are great for making pathways and stepping stones, whilst groups of larger boulders are used in Oriental gardens to create a stunning focal point.
