Garden Trends of 2015

Posted on: 07/07/2015

The RHS Royal Hampton Court Flower Show is currently running until the 10th July and so far we have seen some excellent garden designs and plenty of inspiration for your garden at home. Just like the fashion industry, the garden has its trends too and this year sees some of the best themes and concepts for your outdoor space.

Planting

  • Structural plants: Use distinctive shapes to break up large scale, single species perennial plantings such as yuccas and agaves.
  • Distinctive evergreens: Take advantage of the increasing number of plant fairs (Hampton Court Flower Show) and specialist plant catalogues to find lesser known species. These will provide an excellent focal and talking point in your garden.
  • Trees, conifers, shrubs and perennials: Try working these back into planting schemes and use long-life, sustainable planting instead of less cost-effective short season plants that flower only once. Look close to home for planting ideas as they will endure local weather conditions.

Landscaping

  • Portuguese pavement: inspired by the original 19th century wave-patterned mosaic squares and pavements of Lisbon, it's a great idea to use black and white setts in small spaces with more intricate designs.
  • Dry stone walling: By using slate and sandstone you can create this traditional craft into a modern look. You can use it as a focal point or use it to surround a water feature or part of your garden.
  • Water Feature: A water feature will add gentle sound, texture and movement to your garden. A self-circulating option is ideal nestled amongst your flower beds or sitting on your patio.
