Herringbone Paving: Stylish and Long Lasting Design
Posted on: 14/08/2015The famous saying says that “All roads lead to Rome”. Well, when it comes to paving design and specifically the Herringbone pattern, many of those roads lead back to Rome as well. See whilst it is possible for us to lay paving in any one of dozens of beautiful patterns, it was the Romans some 2500 years ago who discovered the stability that this pattern offers.
It was approximately 500BC that the Romans realised that the maintenance and development of the empire hinged on construction of viae publicae – roads to me and you. The construction of roads allowed for:
- The efficient overland movement of the army, officials and civilians.
- The carriage of official communications.
- The transportation of trade goods.
Built on a bed of rocks and stone, Roman roads varied in size from local roads to vast highways connecting major areas of civilisation.
The Strength of the Herringbone Design
As the years went on the Romans would end up building up to 50,000 miles of roadway, the majority of which were constructed using an interlocking paver system. This system, based on the skeleton of a herring, was discovered to be one of the most effective designs. It was found that when the ‘V’ pattern faced the direction of the traffic, the roads were stronger and more durable.
