How to Clean your Concrete Patio

Posted on: 11/02/2015

A patio can be enjoyed anytime of the year but they are mainly used throughout the spring and summer months when the sun is shining. They are a great place to entertain guests and have a BBQ on or simply an area to relax on a hot summer's day. Whatever the reason you use your patio for, it is important it gets cleaned like the rest of your house does. Overtime it may have been affected by the natural elements and any other scuffs, stains and marks that it could have been exposed to. Your patio is a worthwhile investment, so prevent it from getting dirty and follow our simple tips.

There are many cleaning companies out there who are able to clean your patio for you and in circumstances where it's a big job then they may need to be called in. However, for minimal cleaning and to maintain your patio, it's easy to do yourself and saves you money.

Preparation

  • If you have anything on your patio such as plant pots or furniture, you're going to want to remove these before you begin cleaning your patio.
  • Sweep or rinse the entire patio so that all dirt, debris and leaves are removed

What to use

  • Washing up liquid: If you have left it a while since last cleaning your patio, then try a washing up liquid with some water to brighten the surface. Use a natural or synthetic bristle that can tackle any tough stains. This is suitable for smaller, concentrated areas rather than the whole patio.
  • Saw dust: This is a great material to use if you have any grease stains on your patio. You may have some stains if you have a BBQ. Simply sprinkle sawdust on the greasy area and then wash it away the following day, the saw dust would have soaked up the grease overnight ensuring you have a clean patio again.
  • Garden hose: A garden hose is good to wash away general spills and dirt but doesn't have much pressure behind it so you will need a scrubbing brush to get rid of the difficult stains and marks.
  • Pressure washer: Using a pressure washer to clean your patio is the ideal option. You are able to clean your entire patio with a pressure washer and does the same as a garden hose does but with more force behind it. Avoid using a pressure washer that is higher than 1900 psi as you don't want to risk damaging the concrete.

We recommend cleaning your patio before the spring, ensuring you get to use your patio throughout the summer months.
