Landscaping Tips That Can Save You Money
Posted on: 01/07/2015These beautiful sunny days are probably encouraging you to get outside and tend to your garden. It's the perfect time to spruce up your landscape and you can do so with these simple (and budget friendly) landscaping tips.
Tips
Compare shops: If you have a few nurseries to choose from, it's always a good idea to compare prices and quality between them all. You may find some great deals from online garden centres too.
Add manure: Using manure as a fertiliser keeps plants healthy and green. Many local farmers either sell it for cheap or even for free, so it's worth having a look around. Let fresh manure age before using it, otherwise the high salt concentration may hurt your plants and introduce more weeds into your garden.
Make your own compost: This is really easy to do and can be made from garden and food waste such as fruit scraps, grass clippings and dry leaves. This will help improve you soil's condition, aeration, and water holding capacity, not to mention saving money.
Don't cut your lawn too short: Most lawns do best if grown to about 2 or 2 ½ inches tall. The higher you let your grass grow, the deeper its root system is, so you don't have to water it as often.
Save surplus flower seeds: Many common flower seeds stay viable for years if stored properly, so if you don't use them all in one year, you can plant the rest of a packet the following year instead.
Use mulch: By using mulch in your garden you can save money. A layer of mulch helps the soil hold moisture better, so you have to water less. Organic mulches break down over time and improve your soil, so you spend less on fertiliser. Mulches also cut down on weeds, so you won't have to purchase weed killers.
Purchase small size plants: although bigger trees provide an instant impact in your garden they're also more expensive. You could get several smaller trees for the same amount of money and they will look just as good.
Practice good pruning: Overgrown or badly pruned trees and shrubs can make your landscape looking unattractive. A good pruning job can save you the expense of replacement plants.
