A Green Garden for 2016

Posted on: 07/01/2016

Green can mean a lot of things. As well as describing a variety of colours between turquoise and chartreuse, it can mean jealous, naive, or sick. However, we’re thinking of a different meaning altogether: ecologically-minded. Here’s a few ways you can make your garden greener in 2016.

Plant Local Species

There are many horror stories of invasive foreign species escaping from gardens and wrecking habitats, the rhododendron and Japanese knotweed being two of the more infamous culprits. When there are so many beautiful native species of plant, beloved by our local wildlife, we don’t need the alien invaders. This year, plant foxglove and Jacob’s ladder for the butterflies, borage and thistle for the bees, daffodils and poppies to grace your vases. Celebrate the best of British flowers.

Plant a Tree

Trees are miracle plants: they remove carbon dioxide from the air and replace it with the oxygen we need to breathe. They give you dappled shade on a sunny day, and provide a stable climbing frame for your children. Many of them display glorious flowers in spring and delicious fruit in autumn. If you do one thing to improve your garden this year, plant a tree!

Dig a Pond

A pond is a wonderful addition to a green garden. It will expand the types of plants you can cultivate to include aquatics like the pond lily and water crowfoot, and provide a habitat for amphibians like frogs and toads that will help keep your slug population down.
