Be Inspired by the Cordoba Courtyard Festival
Posted on: 19/05/2016The city of Cordoba in AndalucÃa has a tradition of courtyards and patios that dates back to the Roman occupation. The weather is so hot that buildings tend to be built around a central patio. This shady courtyard is cooler than the average temperature on the streets, and often incorporates water features and scented climbing plants. Once a year, in May, residents open their private courtyards to the public for the two-week duration of the Cordoba Courtyard Festival.
Inspirational Patios
The grandest patios on display in Cordoba can be seen at the 14th Century Viana Palace. Every year they display twelve patios in stunning formal designs. However, one of the great pleasures of the festival is visiting the smaller private residences where you may find a Moorish mosaic or be greeted by the scents of orange blossom and jasmine. Modern apartment style buildings also have courtyards and cooperatives of young and enthusiastic gardeners are anxious to show that their patios are a match for those of any palace or villa.
The Spanish Influence
The courtyards of Cordoba have inspired many British tourists to rethink the possibilities of the humble British patio. The weather here doesn’t warrant a tradition of internal courtyards but most patios border at least one wall and a trellis or pergola can provide further shade. There is a lot to learn from the Spanish tradition - water features and scented plants can make summer evenings on your patio a special experience.
