Case Study: A Garden Transformed

Posted on: 15/09/2017

Here at Knights Paving and Landscaping, we recently undertook one of the bigger jobs that we have been tasked with in our company’s history. Our customer asked us to revive the back garden of their property. On this occasion, the client had a strong idea of what they wanted out of us. They wanted us to make their garden lawn into a stylish and modern patio with an outdoor kitchen and sunken seating areas.

The original garden layout was a very large space. Grass covered the area of the proposed development and the path next to the garage had become overgrown with weeds. The client wanted us to replace the border fences with a more modern style of fencing.

Working closely with the client, we identified what would work best for their property. They had a vision of how their garden would look when completed – it was our job to make it real. First step was to remove the turf to gain access to the area we were to work on.

The next step was to lay down concrete so that we had a foundation to put our paving slabs down. The client wanted an outdoor kitchen and bar and a sunken seating area with an in-built gas fired fire-pit. The right side of the patio was where the kitchen would be accompanied by a dining area. We also created the foundations for the raised area at the top of the garden.

Once the concrete had set, we could start to move some of the materials onto that side of the patio for storage. On the left side of the image, you can see our preparations for the sunken seating area around the fire-pit. You may also have noticed that the original border fence was removed ready for the more modern fence we were to install.

We started laying down the paving. The slabs are a considerable improvement on the ones we removed from the side of the garage. The new border fence was put in to replace the old vertical close-board fencing. The client opted for a modern-style fence comprised of horizontal bars of cedarwood.

The patio was laid with porcelain patio tiles which are baked at 1400 degrees. The paving slabs were stuck down with specialist paving slurry, essentially a hard wearing glue for porcelain slabs that helps cement to adhere to the non-porous surface of the porcelain. The  contemporary paving was manufactured by Bradstone.

Towards the end of the six-week build, we had already built the structures for the fire pit, outdoor kitchen and outdoor dining area. We laid fresh turf at the top of the garden and behind the fire pit. We created a raised flower bed at the top of the garden.

Here is the final product of six-weeks of highly focussed work. As you can see, the garden has been transformed into a completely new modern structure. The fire pit with its built-in seating is completed and so too is the outdoor kitchen area. Both of these areas required gas which was piped from bottles stored in the garage. The garage has been rendered and had a fresh coat of paint and the path next to it is modern and free of weeds. The flower beds at the top and side of the garden have had trees added to them and by the firepit you will notice shrubs in shingle flower beds.
