Contemporary or Traditional Paving Designs?

What do your garden walls say about you? Are you a modernist who loves clean white render or a traditionalist who likes reclaimed red bricks on cream cement? Your garden paving can express your personality too. Contemporary or traditional paving – which should you choose?

Contemporary Paving Designs

When it comes to paving, concrete is the ultimate contemporary material. Concrete slabs can come in pretty much any colour you like, allowing you to experiment with exciting new looks. A combination of straight lines and curves is a very contemporary patio design. Think round edges that cut an almost an organic shape across your garden, created from smart paving in straight, modern lines.

Until the invention of concrete slabs, all patios were paved with quarried stone. Some stone, such as slate and sandstone, lends itself to being cut into slabs. The heavy nature of stone made it difficult to transport, so patios tended to be paved with the local stone. These days a lot of stone slabs are quarried and cut abroad, then shipped over here, so your choices for a natural stone patio have never been greater. A traditional patio design tends to be a more formal shape: a rectangle adjacent to the house or an oval surrounding a feature of your garden. If you have a period property, traditional paving would complement it perfectly.
