5 Early Winter Gardening Tips from the Royal Horticultural Society

Posted on: 23/11/2016

When it comes to landscaping, Knight’s Paving and Landscaping are the experts. We consult with our clients to figure out the perfect layout of their garden and then lay patios, raise flower beds, dig ponds and generally perform all the backbreaking labour required to give you the base for the garden you have always wanted. When it comes to the finer points of horticulture, we recommend you turn to a different kind of expert. The gardeners at the Royal Horticultural Society know a thing or two about gardening: here are their top 5 early winter gardening tips.

Some purple flowers growing through the ground in winter
  1. Clear up fallen leaves. Giving the patio a quick sweep will make it look a hundred times better. You also need to clear leaves off your lawn, out of your flower beds and out of your pond. They get everywhere!
  2. Raise Containers. Containers can sit flat on your patio in the summer, but there is a danger of waterlogging if they are left like this in winter. Sit them up on small bricks or pieces of broken paving slab so that they drain more easily.
  3. Plant Bulbs. The earliest spring flowers grow from bulbs. So if you want snowdrops, crocuses and daffodils, get those bulbs in the ground now!
  4. Prune Roses. Large rose bushes can be damaged by ‘wind rock’ caused by being blown about in high winds. Trimming them back prevents this and they will grow back in time for a beautiful summer display.
  5. Net Brassicas. Cabbages, broccoli and brussels sprouts are a great source of winter nutrition... and not just for humans. Pigeons love them. Netting will stop these feathered thieves from getting to your greens before you do.

There’s plenty to do in the garden at this time of year. Work that you put in now will pay off later. We are always happy to share our landscaping advice and gardening expertise.
