5 Lawn Care Tips You Need this Summer
Posted on: 27/07/2016We British love a good, green lawn – but after last week’s heatwave, your lawn might not be looking its best. Help is at hand! Check out our top tips for looking after your lawn this summer, and give it a bit of TLC.
1. Water Your Lawn During Dry Spells
Like all plants, grass needs sunlight and water. We’ve all seen how quickly a lawn can turn into a jungle when the weather is a mix of sunshine and showers. During a prolonged dry spell, you will need to water your lawn regularly to stop the grass drying up and turning yellow.
2. Cut the Grass Once a Fortnight
The longer you leave it, the more wild your lawn becomes. Regular cutting is the best way to keep it in check. If you’d rather spend your Sunday sunning yourself, there are usually teenagers in the family or down your street that will be willing to do this important chore for cash.
3. Catch Weeds Before they Cause Damage
Most of us will put up with the odd bit of clover amongst the blades of grass, but everybody hates the long rooted and self-seeding dandelions. Pull weeds when they are small or you might wind up with gaping holes in your lawn.
4. Over-Seed Sparse Areas
If your lawn is suffering from one or two ‘bald patches’, you may need to over-seed these areas. Break up the surface with a fork, then sow grass seed at half the rate the packet recommends. In about a week, new grass should be sprouting up to fill in the gaps in your lawn.
5. Add Nitrogen
A really luscious looking lawn is a nitrogen-rich lawn. There are two main ways to add nitrogen to your lawn. One is to take the box off the back of the mower and allow the cut grass to decompose naturally back into the soil. The other is to use a nitrogen-enriched feed that can be added to the lawn when you water it. You can buy these in gardening centres or you can make your own nitrogen-rich feed by fermenting stinging nettles in an old water butt.
That’s all there is to it! Just follow these simple tips and you will have a beautiful green lawn that is a delight to sit on, play on or just admire from the patio with a glass of Chardonnay.
