2017 Garden Design Trends

Posted on: 31/01/2017

Gardens, by their very nature, evolve slowly. Plants take time to mature and grow and a keen gardener plans both months and years ahead. That said, there are some trends in garden design that we see on an increasing basis and that look set to be even more visible in 2017. If you are moving into a new house or looking to revamp a tired garden - these are the design trends you might want to implement.

Natural Stone vs Concrete

A Knights patio

People love a patio. A paved level area of garden makes a great little suntrap. Increasingly, people are looking to natural stone building materials such as slate, granite and sandstone for their patios. Natural stone can give a more cottagey feel to a patio than concrete paving slabs. However, concrete paving slabs are available in pretty much any colour you like and tend to be favoured by people who want a more modern looking patio.

Fake Turf

When you have only a small patch of lawn, say 10 feet square, it is hardly worth storing a lawn mower. Fake turf is one solution that we are seeing gain popularity. Fake turfs are looking increasingly lifelike (without actually fooling anybody) and make a durable addition to a small garden. Fake turf lawns are great for golfers who want to practise their putting.

Smart Gardens

Extensive watering systems that can be set to operate on a timer have been around for a while. The latest innovations allow you to control them through an app on your smartphone. You can check the weather back home and make sure your plants have enough water - all from your sun lounger on a beach holiday in Greece.

Sustainability and Localism

Sourcing local materials and growing plants that are native to our island are essential components of the new trends towards sustainability and localism. There are so many beautiful native plants and stone doesn’t need to be shipped halfway around the world in order to build a patio. In 2017, people are thinking more about the impact their choices make on the environment and action can start at home in their back gardens.
