Gardener's Question Time: A Perennial Favourite
Posted on: 06/07/2016When it comes to paving and landscaping, we consider ourselves the experts. At Knights, we work with our customers to design and create the perfect garden space. However, once you have a beautiful garden, you need a different kind of expert to teach you all the tips and tricks to keep it that way. That’s why green-fingered Brits have been tuning into a particular radio show for nearly 70 years: Gardener’s Question Time.
Humble Beginnings
GQT has a golden format for radio. An audience of amateur gardening enthusiasts put their questions to the experts in the field (or garden in this case). The show, originally called How Does your Garden Grow?, first aired in 1947. It was an immediate hit with the radio audience and producers loved it – as the format requires no scripts, actors or effects, it is relatively cheap to produce.
Golden Era
Older radio fans will remember the trio of gently bickering experts that fronted the show during its golden era. Professor Alan Gemmell, Fred Loads and Bill Sowerbutts spent the 1950s, 60s and a large portion of the 70s gently disagreeing about the best ways to prevent pests, encourage blooms and improve composting techniques.
Modern Day
In the golden era of Gardener’s Question Time, the experts were provided with the questions beforehand so they could research their answers before going live on air. The tradition was dropped in 1994, and now only the most knowledgeable gardeners dare to be a panel member!
