Making the Most of Your Small Garden
Posted on: 17/08/2016You don’t need acres of land in order to enjoy your garden. Many of the terraced properties in the towns and cities of East Anglia boast small gardens. With a little bit of thought put into the design, you can get a lot out of a small space.
Getting Started with a Smaller Space
Every square inch counts when you are designing for a smaller space, so start by sketching out a design. You don’t have to go all Michealangelo - a rough sketch will do. Think about where the sun is at various times of day and what you like to do in your garden. Do you want to grow flowers and vegetables?
Think about Scrapping your Lawn
There is something very English about the desire to possess a neat rectangle of grass, but it is not essential. If you have a lawn, you need a lawnmower. If you have a lawnmower, you have to have a shed to keep it in. You can free up a lot of space by choosing an alternative to a lawn, such as a patio or a bed of shingle. If you can’t bear to part with your lawn, at least install a decent garden path that will stop people walking across the grass and turning it into a mudbath.
Assess your Paving Options
This really comes down to what you like to do in your garden. For the green fingered soul who is happiest when wielding the watering can and the secateurs, a patio surrounded by trellising and raised beds is ideal. The sun worshipper will want to make sure that their patio is in the optimum position for catching rays. For others it’s all about the built-in barbecue.
Pots for Flowers and Trees
Lots of plants respond well to being grown in pots. All flowers will bloom happily in pots that drain well. Tomatoes are especially suited to growing in pots as they appreciate rich compost. You can buy dwarf varieties of fruit trees that make a beautiful adornment to your patio and provide you with an edible treat in the late summer and autumn.
