Spring Projects that will Transform your Garden
Posted on: 28/03/2017Last week saw the northern hemisphere pass through the vernal equinox, which means that there are now more daylight hours than night-time hours in each day. So, there’s no excuse not to be out in your garden. It’s been a long winter and we’ve got a few bank holiday weekends coming up. Here are a few spring projects to transform your garden.
Nail up a Nesting Box
If you love the sound of birdsong in the springtime, nail up a bird box to encourage birds to come and nest in your garden. Make sure that the box is made of wood as metal boxes can be too hot and ceramic boxes too cold. If you are technologically astute, you could set up a CCTV camera so that you can see inside the nesting box.
Weed Your Beds
If you’re organised, your seedlings are probably getting a head start in life under glass in the greenhouse on the kitchen windowsill. Give your flower beds a thorough weeding before planting out your precious seedlings. This will mean they’ll have less competition for the nutrients in the soil.
Plant Spring Greens
Vegetables never taste better than when they are picked fresh from the garden. Now is the time to plant peas, lettuces, spinach and leeks. Watch out for the slugs though! They can devour a whole crop overnight when the plants are tiny.
Prune Your Fruit Trees
Make sure you prune your fruit trees before the first tiny blossom buds appear. If the buds are out, pruning will have to wait until next year as you can stress the tree resulting in a weak crop. Pruning clippings are a great roughage supplement to a compost bin.
Patch up Your Lawn
If there are any bare patches on your lawn after the winter, these can be easily repaired. Mix grass seed in a bucket of nutrient-enriched soil and spread evenly over any area that is looking thin. Grass is a thirsty plant so keep it well watered. And don’t let the kids play football on that bit for a while!
