Suggestions to add Colour to Your Garden this Winter

Posted on: 17/11/2016

The fantastic summer displays of flowers are a distant memory and the golden leaves of autumn have turned  into a sludgy pile at the edge of your patio waiting to be added to the compost. If your winter garden is all bare sticks and brown earth, read our suggestions for adding a bit of colour.

Plant Some Jurassic Ferns

Ferns are ancient members of the plant kingdom’s dry land branch, they have more in common with plants that dominated when dinosaurs roamed than they do with modern flowering plants and trees. Also, they are hardy and many species retain their colour in winter. Try planting Hart’s Tongue, King’s Fern or Golden Fern.

Feed The Birds

Invite colourful birds into your garden with a bird feeder. Birds find it hard to get all the food they need in winter so you can help them out with a few breadcrumbs, nuts and seeds suspended in a bird feeder. Stick to feeders, as an open bird table can attract unwanted pests such as rats and grey squirrels.

Sow the Winter Sun

‘Winter Sun’ is the common name of the Oregon Grape, a species of Mahonia. These evergreen shrubs produce fragrant yellow flowers at a time of year when most plants are much less active.
